The EU GDPR and India’s DPDP Act both protect personal data, but they differ in scope and detail.

How they compare

GDPR is the EU regulation with extraterritorial reach and detailed rights. The DPDP Act, 2023 governs digital personal data in India and introduces the Data Principal, Data Fiduciary and Consent Manager, overseen by the Data Protection Board of India.

Which applies to you

If you serve EU individuals, GDPR applies. If you process personal data in India, the DPDP Act applies. Many Indian firms must meet both.
