What is CMMI (Capability Maturity Model Integration)?
CMMI, Capability Maturity Model Integration, is a framework that helps an organisation measure and improve how it delivers work. It is governed by ISACA and administered by the CMMI Institute. Rather than a certificate issued by an auditor, CMMI results in an appraisal outcome. A certified Lead Appraiser reviews evidence against the model and awards a Maturity Level rating that is valid for three years. Indian organisations adopt the model through two main views, CMMI for Development (DEV) and CMMI for Services (SVC).
The five CMMI maturity levels
CMMI defines five maturity levels that describe how disciplined and predictable an organisation’s processes are.
- Level 1, Initial. Work gets done, but processes are unpredictable and largely reactive.
- Level 2, Managed. Projects are planned, performed and controlled with defined discipline.
- Level 3, Defined. Processes are standardised and described across the organisation.
- Level 4, Quantitatively Managed. Processes are measured and controlled using data.
- Level 5, Optimizing. The organisation focuses on continuous, sustained improvement.
Many Indian firms target Level 3, while high maturity organisations pursue CMMI Level 5 and high maturity training.
CMMI is an appraisal, not a certification
It helps to understand that CMMI is not a certification in the way ISO standards are certified. There is no certificate issued by a certification body. Instead, a certified CMMI Lead Appraiser leads a Benchmark Appraisal, examines evidence against the model and awards a Maturity Level rating. That rating is recorded by the CMMI Institute and remains valid for three years. Learn more about the CMMI appraisal in India and how CMMI compares with ISO standards in India.
CMMI for Development (DEV) versus CMMI for Services (SVC)
CMMI is applied through model views suited to what an organisation does. CMMI for Development (DEV) is designed for organisations that build products and software, covering engineering and project practices. CMMI for Services (SVC) is designed for organisations that deliver and manage services, such as IT services, BPO and managed service providers. Univate helps you choose the right view and target level, then runs the engagement through to a Benchmark Appraisal. Request your CMMI quote today.
Why Indian IT and services organisations pursue CMMI
Indian IT, software and services companies pursue CMMI to win domestic and export contracts, to satisfy enterprise and government procurement requirements, and to demonstrate mature, reliable delivery to global clients. A recognised CMMI maturity level helps organisations clear vendor assessments, reduce delivery risk and compete for larger engagements. As a CMMI Institute partner, Univate Solutions runs the work end to end with an in-house certified CMMI Lead Appraiser.
