CMMI defines five maturity levels that show how disciplined and predictable your processes are. Most Indian organisations target Maturity Level 3, while larger firms pursue Level 5.

The five CMMI maturity levels

Level 1 is Initial, where work is ad hoc. Level 2 is Managed, with basic project discipline. Level 3 is Defined, with standard organisation wide processes. Level 4 is Quantitatively Managed, using data and statistics. Level 5 is Optimizing, with continuous, data driven improvement.

Which level should you target

Level 3 is the common requirement in tenders and proves mature, repeatable delivery. Level 4 and 5 suit organisations that want quantitative control and high maturity.
